5 heartfelt lessons travelling with mum

You probably learnt the most from your parents, and they never stopped teaching you at any stage of your life – if you care to pay attention and learn. I’m glad I’m able to fulfil one of my mother’s wishes – to take her to Japan for a holiday. It’s the first time I spent six consecutive days with her since I left home. She may have learnt a lot about Japan, but I’m the one who’s been taught real lessons by spending this time with her.

A vacation, a daughter and her mother, and five heartfelt lessons applicable to work and life.

1) It’s not just about you. The other person(s) matters too.

When you do or plan something, consider the needs and wishes of others, and in my case, my mother’s age. People don’t always have the same speed, strength, style etc. as you.

2) Everyone appreciates different things in a vacation (or work and life).

No matter how strongly you feel about something, try to understand why the other person(s) appreciates something else instead of dismissing their preferences and convincing them to see and accept your views. You may be surprised at the reason if you are willing to hear.

3) We are humans, we will feel frustrated at times, but there is no need to be mean or rude.

Control your temper and tantrums. You can get your message across by being calm and/or polite, especially if the other person has no ill intentions. Just because someone is close to you (works for you or serves you) doesn't mean they should tolerate this kind of behaviour.

4) Take care of your loved ones and each other. Laugh with one another. You’ll make the journey lovelier.

People will never forget how you make them feel. Connect and bond with the people around you, they will greatly enhance your life.

5) Sharing (a room) isn’t bad at all!

Learn to share, as early and as often as you can, it builds character and responsibility.

No matter where you are or who you are with, I wish you a fantastic vacation.
